2019-2020 SEASON RECAP
Before his sudden passing on Christmas Eve, Head Coach Dunbar added 11-1 record to his dual mark making his total 52-2 career.
Coach Winterton completed the season with the team ending 20-2 on the year, before losing in the first round of the State Playoffs.
Cary won the Conference finishing 7-0, having 9 All-Conference Wrestlers and The Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Conference in Kobe Early.
Coach Dunbar was the unanimous selection for Coach of the Year as voted upon by the Conference coaches .
Cary struggled (in Cary Standards) throughout the season without a defending State Champion and an injured Ryan Wolfram who returned January 31st in time to win the Regionals and place third in the State Tournament for his third straight year!
With the strength of Wolfram in the line up Cary finished 2nd in the Regional and placed 6th in the State Tournament with only 4 wrestlers!
Kobe Early 1st, Rylan Vann 2nd, Ryan Wolfram 3rd and Paul Grena top 8.
Kobe Early was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at every tournament during the year including Regionals and the State Tournament! Obviously, Kobe won every tournament during his career including 4X Dixon, 4X Orange, 4X Mark Adams, 4X Boneyard Bash, 4X Regionals, etc. At least 15 MOW awards were claimed by Kobe as well.
Kobe's record 198-1 with his only loss in the State Finals his freshman year when he lost a close bout with a larger, senior returning State Champion! Kobe was All-American his sophomore year in NHSCA Nationals. Kobe has committed to wrestling for Appalachian State University.

CARY JUNIORS, KOBE EARLY AND DAVIN VANN WIN INDIVIDUAL TITLES
ALEXANDER AND WOLFRAM TAKE HOME MEDALS
CARY PLACES 2ND OVERALL
COACH DUNBAR WINS 'COACH OF THE YEAR'
COACH WINTERTON HONORED
February 16th, 2019 - Greensboro, NC -- Cary Wrestling capped off another stellar season at the State Tournament in Greensboro with plenty of awards to haul back to Cary. Junior, Kobe Early completed another undefeated season, winning his second State Championship. Moving up two weight-classes from 106 pounds, Early won by 4-3 decision over Will Edmiston of Lake Norman in the 120 pound finals match. Like Early, Edmiston was an undefeated 2018 State Champion (113lbs) and was undefeated going into the state championship match between last year's champions, respectively at 106 and 113. Notably, Early also dealt Edmiston's only other career loss in the 2017 semi-finals at 106lbs.
Davin Vann etches his name next to famed Cary Wrestling heavyweight elites, Eloheim Palma and Rod Perry, as the junior won his first state championship over Tray Regan of Lumberton, 4-3. Vann avenged his loss to Regan earlier in the season.
Rounding out Cary's strong junior contingency, Ryan Wolfram repeated his third place finish last year at 170 pounds. The 'Wolfman' won back to back matches to arrive in the championship semifinals, before falling 13-11 to Laney's Willis in what many are calling the most exciting match of the tournament. Ryan bounced back and, with back to back pins, made quick work of his opponents en route to a bronze medal.
Senior, Wesley Alexander finishes his career in a Cary singlet on the podium that which proves illusive for most wrestlers. Wesley dropped his first match, but resolved to win four following matches, storming his way back in the consolation bracket to a 4th place finish at 160lbs.
Also scoring critical points for the Imps, Paul Grena (138lbs) and Marlon Toruno (152lbs) narrowly missed out on podium finishes; however, were vital in Cary's six-man tournament runner-up triumph. Cary bagged a total of 92.5 team points, bested only by tournament champions, Mooresville.
The wrestlers were not the only ones to bring home hardware, Head Coach Anthony Dunbar was awarded the North Carolina Wrestling Coach of the Year for the 2018-2019 season! Congrats Coach! Additionally, former head-coach, current assistant coach, and renowned legend, Jerry Winterton was also honored for his induction into the National High School Hall of Fame shortly before the parade of champions began.

2018 STATE CHAMPIONS
CARY BEATS WEST FORSYTH 38-32 TO WIN ITS 21ST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN PROGRAM HISTORY
February 3rd, 2018 -
BY J. MIKE BLAKE / mblake@newsobserver.com / N&O's original story Here.
GREENSBORO - All eyes in the Greensboro Fieldhouse were focused on the last match of the first neutral-site N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling championships.
The score was tied.
It was the last bout.
A winner-take-all for the 4A title.
What every wrestler dreams about, Cary’s Conrad Schiess was ready for.
Schiess pinned his opponent in 48 seconds, giving the Imps a 38-32 victory over two-time defending champion West Forsyth. It is the Cary’s ninth dual-team title and its 16th appearance in the state final.
Head coach Anthony Dunbar didn’t know what to expect from his Cary (21-0) team entering the year after losing the core of last year’s team.
But this year’s Imps won the school its first title since 2009, and they did so with complete team efforts like Saturday.
“When we looked at (the matchups) we thought it could go one of two ways: it was either going to be very, very close, or it was going to be very ugly in (West Forsyth’s) favor,” Dunbar said. “The guys just stepped it up and were ready to wrestle today. They came through for us. ... It’s unbelievable how these kids have improved every week. That’s just a testament to how most of these kids were raised and how they were brought up. I’ve never seen a team like this.”
The match was back-and-forth from almost the outset.
Cary started the match on the right foot with a pin by Cymek Shaw (138 pounds) and a 4-2 overtime victory by Paul Grena (145).
West Forsyth (25-10) took its first lead 10-9 after Cary’s Marlon Toruno (152) lost 12-3 and Wesley Alexander (160) was pinned.
Ryan Wolfram (170) won by tech fall, 24-8, to give Cary the lead again at 14-10, and Nicholas Straight (182) won by pin to make it 20-10.
Dontay Turner (195) lost 4-2 in overtime, but Davin Vann (220) pinned his opponent, and Cary led 26-13.
Jordan Glover (285) lost 16-3 and Aaron Garrigues (106) was pinned, and Cary’s lead dwindled to 26-23.
Kobe Early (113) remained undefeated this season by winning his match by pinfall, giving Cary a 32-23 cushion with three bouts left. West Forsyth pinned Cary’s Thomas Kalland (120) and topped Anthony Schiess (126) in ultimate overtime after Anthony couldn’t get up from a down position in 30 seconds.
That set up Conrad Schiess’ heroics. He was named MVP, an obvious choice after winning the title with his pin of West Forsyth’s Kyle Perkins.
“It was my time to step up and get the job done, and I was excited to do that,” Schiess said. “We knew this was our year to win states and be a state championship team, and we did that today.”

(Courtesy of N&O) - Back to the glory days: Cary (20-0) is making its 16th appearance in the 4A title match and is 8-7 in championship bouts. But this year’s team is making its first trip back since 2010. The Imps face two-time defending state champion West Forsyth (25-9).
Head coach Anthony Dunbar, a Cary alumnus, said it meant the world to him to get the program back to the 4A final.
“I have so much pride in this school and this program,” Dunbar said. “This is for all the alumni and all the guys who have come through. These guys have worked their tails off all year hard and they’ve earned it. Now we’re just looking forward to Saturday.”

N&o - 11.9.2017 - Longtime Cary wrestling coach Jerry Winterton overwhelmed as former wrestlers come back to honor him
BY J. MIKE BLAKE - NOVEMBER 09, 2017 5:53 PM - CARY
Former Cary High wrestling coach Jerry Winterton knew only that, during a team scrimmage on Thursday, the school would be unfurling a new banner to honor his induction to the National Federation of High Schools Hall of Fame .
He had no clue what was next.
More than 50 former wrestlers showed up to surprise him, some dating back to his first year of coaching in 1980.
There was one more twist: The school also renamed one of its wrestling mats after Winterton, who is still an assistant with the program. Athletic director Mike Dunphy said he had asked Winterton to sign his name for something unrelated so he could get the coach’s signature to place on the mat.
As a head coach, Winterton led the Imps to 19 state championships (11 individual tournaments, eight duals) and was runner-up 13 times (six individual tournaments, seven duals). In dual meets, he went 620-16 (97.5 percent) at Cary alone, 642-34 (94.9) overall and 540-3 (99.4) in the regular season.
His program led the nation in tournaments won – 166.
From 1996 to 2010, Cary finished first or second in 24 out of a possible 28 dual-team and individual tournament championships.
Twice, he was named national high school wrestling coach of the year and is a member of the Cary High Sports Hall of Fame, the North Carolina chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the N.C. High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

CARY TOPS RIVERSIDE -3RD ROUND OF STATE DUALS, FALLS TO LANEY IN NCHSAA 4A EAST WRESTLING FINAL

CARY

For Cary’s senior duo of Delante Robinson and Nate Kinsey, the focus now turns to individual wrestling glory.
Both remained undefeated on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as the host Imps suffered their first loss of the season with a 33-30 defeat at the hands of Laney in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A East dual-team final.
Cary (24-1) had reached the 4A East final with a 38-34 third-round victory over Riverside earlier Thursday, but the Imps dug themselves too deep a hole early on against the Wilmington-based Buccaneers, losing seven of the first 10 matches. Laney, a 35-31 winner over Cape Fear earlier in the third round, will host defending state champion West Forsyth on Saturday in the 4A title match.
Robinson and Kinsey were among Cary’s individual winners against Laney. Robinson won by a 6-3 decision over Austin Nalley in a 145-pound match while Kinsey prevailed by a 15-6 decision over Khalil Tucker in a 160 bout.
Robinson is 39-0 and ranked second in the state in 4A at 145, while Kinsey is 41-0 and ranked second at 152. Both next compete at regionals in Knightdale on Feb. 10-11 and then the state championships on Feb. 16-18.
“I’m very ready, I’ve been waiting for this chance at a state title since I have ever started wrestling,” said Robinson, a state qualifier last year at 138. “This is my one chance to actually prove myself and win a state title.”
Robinson feels he has been much more aggressive than in the past, the primary reason in his mind for his ascension into legitimate state-title contender.
“I’m a lot better at being determined to get what I want in the match,” Robinson said. “I really go after it now.”
Kinsey went 1-2 at 152 in last year’s state tournament, admittedly hurt by a tough draw. He says increased dedication toward his offseason work has been the catalyst behind his impressive season.
“I didn’t stop in the offseason,” Kinsey said. “I kept going to tournaments, like the Super 32 Challenge where I went up against the guy ranked 11th in the country (Kyle Cochran of Paramus High School in New Jersey) and lost by a minor.
“Admittedly I wasn’t going to score much on him but going up against a guy like him who ended up winning it, it boosted my confidence and it’s kept me going the whole year.”
While Kinsey and Robinson are both seniors, much of Cary’s lineup is comprised of quite a few younger wrestlers who have several years of scholastic competition ahead of them.
It was that fact that made Thursday’s loss to Laney a little easier to swallow for Cary coach Taylor Cummings.
“Laney’s a very solid team, but I don’t subscribe to the idea that we got buzzsawed or anything,” Cummings said. “I think it hurt us starting off at 132 and losing by a pin, that kind of put us in a hole. ... Our team is so young, we really just building up this team. Next year, we’re going to be even stronger in my opinion. I can’t be too disappointed with how our underclassmen have performed.”

CARY WINS SWAC WRESTLING CROWN IN FINAL BOUT AT HOLLY SPRINGS

JANUARY 25, 2017
BY J. MIKE BLAKE / News & Observer
mblake@newsobserver.com
HOLLY SPRINGS
Eleven different state-ranked wrestlers took the mat with a Southwest Wake Athletic Conference championship hanging in the balance on Tuesday night. It was unmistakably the biggest regular-season wrestling match the Triangle had seen in years.
Cary and Holly Springs each entered the final week of the season undefeated.
Right before the final winner-take-all bout, Cary coach Taylor Cummings told heavyweight Jordan Glover to get a win. Glover told him he’d get a pin.
Glover did as he said, pinning Holly Springs’ Matt Nordberg 3 minutes and 27 seconds into the match, and delivered Cary its first conference title since 2013 with a 33-26 victory. The host Golden Hawks (20-1) had won the conference dual title in each of the three previous seasons with Cary (21-0) finishing second or tied for second each time.
“I was a little nervous,” Glover said. “I said ‘OK, I can prove my point to my coaches that I can do this.’”
The match started with the lightest weight class, the 106-pounders. Cary’s Kobe Early, ranked No. 3 in the state, put the Imps up 6-0 with a pin in 33 seconds.
Holly Springs got back-to-back decisions from No. 7 113-pounder Aaron Wilkie (10-4) and No. 10 120-pounder Daniel Meyers (6-4, 47 seconds into overtime against Ethan Mendel) to tie the score at 6-all.
Cary forfeited to reigning state runner-up Josh Lehr, a strategy that conceded six points while moving up Anthony Schiess (the state’s No. 10 126-pounder) to 132 pounds and Conrad Schiess to 138 to try to minimize big points by No. 7 Logan Perentis (Perentis won 6-4 at 132) and No. 4 Hunter Morton (Morton won 4-2).
After a one-point deduction for not shaking hands after the match, Holly Springs’ lead was 17-6 with eight bouts left.
Holly Springs forfeited to Cary No. 2-ranked 145-pounder Delante Robinson, and the lead was 17-12. Cary’s Nate Kinsey, No. 2 in 152 pounds, won 8-2 and Holly Springs’ Hunter Yost (No. 8, 160), won 5-1.
Holly Springs’ Zion Cooke shifted the match momentum with a pin 2 minutes and 47 seconds into his match with No. 10 Joe Grena. Cooke, No. 4, had Holly Springs up 26-15 with four bouts left.
At that point, Holly Springs had won all the toss-up matches, which was perhaps expected on a night where emotions were high for the Golden Hawks. Coach Nick Nosbisch, who has been out for most of the season after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December, was back on the bench for Tuesday’s match.
“We knew (Holly Springs) would be ready to go for tonight and wrestling for more than just wrestling, for coach Noz, and they fought like hell,” Cary coach Taylor Cummings said. “They deserve a big applause as well. They’ve had a season through adversity and a lot of learning about life; much respect to Holly Springs and their staff.”
But neither team had a decided advantage in the upper weights. It was still anyone’s match.
The Hawks forfeited to Cary 182-pounder Nick Straight, and the lead was down to 26-21.
Cary’s Dontay Turner (195) pulled out a 3-0 win and Davin Vann (220) won 6-0) to take a 27-26 lead and set up a winner-take-all match between Glover and Nordberg.
