Coach Jerry Winterton was 540-3 overall in regular-season dual meets at Cary. If you include the playoffs, the Imps went 621-16 in his 29-year run. Couple that with 11 state tournament championships and eight state dual-team crowns, throw in other mind-boggling stats like 166 tournament wins, 28 consecutive conference championships, 265 consecutive home regular-season wins and going undefeated in regular-season dual meets in 27 of 29 years, and it becomes easy to recognize: Winterton is one of the best coaches North Carolina has ever seen.
After 11 season as an assistant, Coach Winterton took command of Cary Wrestling after the sudden loss of Coach Dunbar. Coach Winterton completed the 2019-2020 season with the team finishing 20-2 on the year, before losing in the first round of the State Playoffs. Coach Winterton interim Head Coaching stint adds nine more regular season victories to his already illustrious career, brining his regular-season career record to 549-3 and 630-17 including the playoffs.

COACH ANTHONY DUNBAR
HEad Coach (2017-2019)

Coach Anthony Dunbar is steeped in Cary's rich winning tradition. As a former wrestler of Coach Winterton, Dunbar was a pivotal member of the 1996, 1997, and 1998 State Championship teams; undefeated in State Dual competition for the Imps and Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 1998 State Duals. Dunbar was a state qualifier in 1998 at 130 lbs and wrestled post-scholastically at N.C. State University.
Dunbar made his way back to Cary as a Coach in 2006, helping coach the Imps to seven more State Championships in four years and 12 wrestlers to Individual titles since joining the staff. He has also coached multiple Cary wrestlers to National Championships and All-American finishes (Will Clark, Kollin Wade, and Boomer Boyd).
Coach Dunbar's tenure as Cary's fourth ever head coach resumed right where he left off as an accomplished wrestler for the Imps. In his first season, Dunbar's team captured the inaugural Tri-6 Conference Championship, a East Regional Title, and a Mideast Regional Title. Most notably, Dunbar's 2017-18 team brought Cary's its 21st State Championship, downing West Forsyth 38-32 in the state dual finals.
On December 24th, 2019, Coach Dunbar unexpectedly passed away. Coach Dunbar was loved by his wrestlers, alumni, and the entire North Carolina wrestling community. The number 21, as he led Cary Wrestling to its 21st state championship, will always be remembered with Coach Dunbar's legacy.

Coach Tom Barry joined the Cary Wrestling staff in 2001. Eleven (12) State Championships have been won with Barry on staff.

Coach Alvarez returns to Cary as an assistant coach in Coach Dunbar's staff. Alvarez, a 2013 State Qualifier at 120lbs, will be a great asset to light and middle-weight wrestlers.

COACH Joey Farnsworth
Coach Joey Farnsworth is a Cary High School alumnus with a teaching degree and a Masters Degree in Exercise Sport Administration. He has wrestled and coached for a combined 21 years. During those years he has accrued numerous titles including multiple state and national titles. As a coach, Joey went on to head coach at two programs before returning to Cary in 2017; these schools include Purnell-Swett High School 2012-2013, and Union Pines High School 2015-2017. During which time he coached a state champion and multiple state placers. Now returning to Cary, Joey is excited to continue the success that the program is known for.
